Redesign and Redevelopment of Crate Hire Company's Website: A WordPress & WooCommerce Solution

Crate Hire Company, a leading provider of crate rental solutions, wanted to improve the online experience for its customers. They engaged Icecube Digital to revamp their website, aiming to streamline the rental process and enhance customer engagement. This case study explores the challenges, solutions, and successful outcomes of this partnership.

Challenges

The Crate Hire Company wants to redesign and redevelop their website using the latest technology stack, providing a fast and easy way to hire moving crates for office and home moves.
They want to have two types of products: Crate Products, which are available for hire, and Packaging Products, which are associated with home or office moves and are available for purchase.
For the Crate Products, we want to create various packages that include different sizes of crates and other packing-related items. The product page should display weekly hire prices and package details, with the ability to update this information at any time from the backend.
For the crate hire service, the client wanted to offer two options for delivery and collection: customer pickup or crate hire delivery. Additionally, custom delivery and collection rates would be applied based on the location selected by the customer and saved with the order and displyed in the order details and confirmation emails.
The client wants customers to fill out a form on the cart page for hired product delivery and collection. This form will capture details such as delivery/pickup and collection dates, property access information, parking availability, and the presence of stairs or lifts. The collected details will be saved with the order and displayed in the order details and order confirmation emails.
A functionality to calculate the delivery cost of hired crates to the customer’s location is required, allowing customers to check the delivery estimate before placing an order.

Our Solution

Based on the client’s requirements for a high level of customization and the number of products they want to offer, our expert team of eCommerce consultants recommends building the website using WordPress with WooCommerce. This platform allows for extended functionality through plugins, and developers can create custom plugins to meet specific needs.
For the website redesign, a custom design was created to ensure a unique look and effectively showcase the hiring products. A custom WordPress theme was developed to implement this design, incorporating dynamic content to allow the client to easily update the content from the backend.
For the product page, we implemented custom code and created new fields in the backend using ACF Pro to display the package contents and hiring price table. This allows the client to easily edit these details from the backend.
We developed a custom plugin to enhance WooCommerce by implementing custom delivery and collection rates based on the customer’s location. This allows the client to add, update and delete different rates associated with specific postcodes. The cart page was also modified to include options for selecting delivery and collection dates, entering the postcode, and calculating the rates based on these selections, displaying the total cost to the customer.
To capture additional information such as property access and parking availability, the cart page was customized to include new fields for entering these details. The order meta and email templates were also modified to store and display this additional information.
To implement the delivery calculation functionality, we extended the custom plugin. The rates are retrieved from the table and displayed in the delivery cost calculator.
